In order to appreciate and applaud voluntary blood donors who help in saving numerous lives, World Blood Donor Day is celebrated every 14th June. It is also celebrated to raise awareness about the need to donate blood regularly to increase the availability of safe blood and its products for patients in need. During the Covid-19 pandemic, blood banks across the globe need the help of blood donors as there is a shortage of blood. And this is the least we can do to help someone in this pandemic. Facts about Blood

Someone needs blood every two seconds.

All the blood that is collected has to be screened for HIV, hepatitis B and C and syphilis before the transfusion.

Blood cannot be manufactured – it can only come from generous donors.

Red cells, platelets, plasma and cryoprecipitate are the transfusable products that can be derived from the blood.

AB+ is a universal recipient of blood, that means they can receive blood from anyone. O- is a universal donor, they can donate blood to any blood group.

People are skeptical about donating blood during the pandemic so here are few facts

It is safe to donate blood during the pandemic as all blood banks follow the highest standards of safety and infection control.

After getting a vaccine dose you have to wait for 14 days to donate blood.

If you have been infected by covid-19, defer donating blood for 28 days. If a person is experiencing fever or sore throat in the past 1-2 weeks, he/she needs to report it before considering blood donation

Donating one unit of blood may save lives of up to three people.

Your body will replace the blood volume (plasma) within 48 hours. It will take four to eight weeks for your body to completely replace the red blood cells you donated.

Patients of other life-threatening medical conditions, like thalassemia, anaemia and blood malignancies need to receive this critical medical service so please donate blood.
