North Koreans Forced to Hand Over Pet Dogs to Be Sold to Restaurants
North Korean president Kim Jong Un has been known for taking bizarre orders during an oppressive regime in the country. From banning photographer for blocking the crowd’s view of him for just 3 seconds to other major restrictions on the citizens. And now comes his latest announcement has made all dog lovers angry.
As per media reports, in order to tackle the national food shortage and dire economic condition in the wake of COVID-19, Kim Jong Un has ordered dog owners in the country to give up their pets for dog meat in restaurants and even state-run zoos.
The report states “Authorities have identified households with pet dogs and are forcing them to give them up or forcefully confiscating them and putting them down.” The move is allegedly to appease the masses as the country has a traditional propensity for consuming dog meat. The order has naturally resulted in a lot of anger amongst the pet dog owners who are reportedly “cursing Kim Jong Un behind his back.” But unfortunately, their hands seem to be tied and there is little they can do now, the source continues.
These pet dog owners are thought to be owned by the elite and wealthy population of the capital city Pyongyang, and are often described as a symbol of capitalist “decadence” by the authorities, as per news. “Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment,” the source adds.Kim Jong Un had previously mentioned owning pets as “a tainted trend by bourgeois ideology” while carrying out its ban in july, as quoted by the English edition of the South Korean newspaper.
People are clearly very angry because of this:
