Reason Why the Stores are Being Closed
Starbucks decided to have this training soon after an incidence, which took place at Philadelphia Starbucks in April. The store manager called the police to arrest two black men who were waiting for their friend in the store. He called them just because they did not order anything and one of them wanted to use the washroom. They were arrested for trespassing. After this incidence, CEO of starbucks Kevin Johnson apologized and gave surety that nothing like this will happen again at any starbucks outlet.
How the training will take place
Staff from all the locations will be divided into small groups so that they can learn together easily. Starbucks Chairman Howard Schultz, Johnson and singer, activist Common will be the virtual guides in the training. Workers will share about their own experiences and watch a film about racial bias. Each store will be offered with a tool kit for help.
Change in Policies
Starbucks has changed its policy to allow people to use Starbucks' restrooms and spend time in stores without making any purchase. Every customer has to behave in an appropriate manner to maintain a warm and welcoming environment. If customers are disruptive, employees have been advised to take an action. The list of inappropriate behaviors includes smoking, using drugs or alcohol, sleeping or improperly using the restroom.
